WOMEN ON COMPANY BOARDS: NUMBERS STILL TOO LOW ACROSS EUROPE

80 % of seats on company boards are occupied by men! This is unacceptable in 21st century Europe and clearly contravenes Article 23 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, the principle of equality between women and men. Moreover, it makes no economic sense. In order to change it, we need to take action: 12 EU Member States, 11 national coordinators, up to 100 visits of the Annual General Meetings (AGMs), 9 European and national project partners including the European Women Lawyers Association (EWLA) and AFFJ (Association française des femmes juristes) in one concerted campaign of women shareholders.

At the Annual Congress of EWLA in Lille, the project "European Women Shareholders Demand Gender Equality" will be promoted and presented during a press conference. The project was set up at the initiative of the German Women Lawyers Association (djb) and is co-funded by the European Commission.

The project idea is simple but highly effective: women shareholders ask the boards at the Annual General Meetings (AGMs) for detailed information about women’s representation in leadership positions at all levels and about the companies’ overall activities to promote women’s careers. The action covers: Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Prof. Jackie Jones (University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE), President of EWLA and national coordinator of UK and Ireland) will be speaking at the conference and announcing the European start of the visits of the AGMs. The project team and other national coordinators will also be available to answer questions.

We hereby invite you to this press conference. Nibbles will be provided.
